Why visit
Kirinda is a small fishing village on the coast south-east of Tissamaharama. Its golden beach is framed by huge granite boulders, and Kirinda Raja Maha Viharaya sits on a rock above the sea with views along the coast.
The legend
According to legend, Princess Viharamahadevi — later the mother of King Dutugemunu — came ashore here after being set adrift at sea. A statue of the princess stands near the temple.
Getting there from Diyadahara
Kirinda is only about 8 km from the resort, making it an easy late-afternoon outing. Go for sunset, then head back for dinner by the lake.
Tips for your visit
- The sea can be rough with strong currents — swim only where locals say it is safe
- Climb the temple rock for the best sunset view
- Visit the fishing harbour in the morning to see the boats come in
