Why visit
Sithulpawwa Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist monastery built on a great granite outcrop on the edge of Yala. It is said to date back more than 2,000 years, and tradition holds that thousands of monks once lived and meditated in its caves.
What to expect
A path and steps lead up the rock past cave shrines and inscriptions to a stupa at the top. The reward is a wide view over the forest and scrub of the Yala area — on a clear day the jungle seems to stretch forever.
Getting there from Diyadahara
Sithulpawwa is about 25 km from the resort, reached by road through wild country — allow around an hour. You may see elephants, peacocks and buffalo along the way, which is why we recommend going with a local driver and returning before dark.
Tips for your visit
- Carry water and wear a hat for the climb
- Watch for wildlife on the access road, including elephants — avoid driving after dark
- Bring a pair of socks: they help on hot rock where shoes are not allowed
