1. Take a safari in Yala National Park

The reason most people come: open-jeep drives through Yala's forest, lagoons and grassland, looking for leopards, elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Our Yala safari guide covers timings, jeeps and what to bring.

2. Visit Kataragama

Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka's most important pilgrimage towns, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. The evening puja (ceremony) is the most atmospheric time to visit. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — and remove shoes at the shrines.

3. See Sithulpawwa Rock Temple

An ancient Buddhist monastery on a rocky outcrop near the edge of Yala, with cave shrines and wide views over the forest. Climb in the cooler morning or late afternoon and carry water.

4. Walk Kirinda beach

Kirinda is a small fishing village with a golden beach and a temple on the rocks above the sea. It is a peaceful place for a sunset walk — though the sea can be rough, so swim only where locals say it is safe.

5. Watch sunrise or sunset at the lakes

Tissamaharama's ancient reservoirs (wewa) are full of birdlife at the start and end of the day — herons, cormorants, kingfishers and painted storks. At Diyadahara you can watch it from the shore of Yoda Kandiya Lake.

6. Try a traditional boat ride

A calm ride on the lake in a traditional outrigger (oru) boat is a gentle way to spend an afternoon between safaris.
